Silk Fabrics Are At The Top For Its Richness Of Look
By Busy Door Guest Blogger | March 19, 2009
There are different kinds of fabrics out of which dresses and clothes are made. Fabric types are divided in to two broad categories: natural and synthetic. Cotton, silk and wool are all natural fabric types. Polyester, nylon, rayon and acrylic are synthetic types of fabric. Natural and synthetic materials are mixed to achieve unique types of garments that offer smoothness and durability. Silk is regarded as the queen of materials. The smoothness of silk endears it to all. The expression of colors becomes more vibrant on the silk fabric than on any other material.
The history of the use of silk dates back to 2640 B.C in China. It is said that a Chinese emperor discovered the process of releasing silk threads by silkworm. Silkworms feed on mulberry leaves for a period of 30 days until it gets very fat. Then it starts releasing a silk thread to build a cocoon. He studied keenly the process and found out a way to use the pure silk prepared by the silkworm. The process of unwinding the silk thread from the silkworm cocoon to prepare fabric was soon mastered by many people in China. The method of silk fabric manufacturing continues to this day in China and the country is the largest producer of silk in the world.
Silk clothes require dry cleaning and the job is best left to professional launderers. Machine or hand washing will spoil the fabric. Silk fabrics should not be left to dry under direct sun light either. Pressing or ironing a silk fabric requires great care and professional experience. A slightly higher heat can burn the material silk. Silk garments should be steam ironed. If possible, a paper or cloth should be placed on the garment while ironing. Silk clothes should be stored in clean, cool, and dry dark places. When hung from hangers, make sure that the edges of the hangers are smooth.
Silk is a fabric that evokes the images of wealth and sensuousness. Both men and women love clothes made of the silk fabric. Though slightly costlier than other fabrics, every family wardrobe has at least one silk garment for special occasions. The rich and famous prefer to dress and drape themselves with silk. Their homes are more likely to be decorated with silk draperies too. Wearing silk clothes put people at their sensuous and confident best. It is not unusual to have the most romantic and sensuous moments in life linked to silk garments.
